Steel Magnolias
With all of the superheroes, spaceships, and horror films we've been discussing lately, we decided it was time to shake things up a little. It might be easy to dismiss Steel Magnolias as a chick flick, but Donna makes the case that it's themes of friendship and loss are pretty universal.
Chris was expecting a very different movie when he first saw this as a kid, but he wound up liking it anyways - even if he never would have admitted to it at the time. Donna didn't see it until college and it turned her into a sobbing mess. Carlos has always been a little surprised how emotional everyone gets over the final act, but he enjoys the film nonetheless.
Topics include: the real life tragedy that inspired the original stage play, who almost played Shelby, the rocky relationship between the cast and their director, misconceptions we had about sex as kids, a simpler (and possibly more effective) version of the pregnancy subplot, the aspects of grief that the film absolutely nails, the rather abrupt ending, and much much more!
